German grammar cases explained simply: nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive become manageable with patterns. This is how we introduce them in the German language course in Bangalore at SM Academy.
The four cases
Nominative is the subject (Der Mann liest). Accusative is the direct object (Ich sehe den Mann). Dative is the indirect object (Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch). Genitive shows possession (Das Auto des Mannes).
Articles
German has three genders: masculine (der), feminine (die), and neuter (das). Articles change with case. Always learn a noun with its article.
Word order
In main clauses the verb is in second position. In subordinate clauses the verb moves to the end. Example: Ich weiß, dass er Deutsch lernt.
